Irony

Irony

Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; a statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea. An ironic story in my life was on new years 2011, my cousin was throwing a party. The last party he threw was on his birthday and it was a great party. The New years party wasn't so great though it was ironic because his birthday party was so good that I couldn't wait for New years but when the day came it didn't live up to my expectations.

The poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson tells an ironic story of Richard Cory who has everything in life and ends up killing himself. Richard Cory behaved like a gentlemen and was shy at times, but people looked up to him because he was a clean cut rich man who had what others dreamed of. This story is ironic because Richard Cory had everything and everybody admired him, he appeared to be happy but took his life. The poem is told from the perspective of a less fortunate person who observes Richard. The poem states "In fine we thought that he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place". this goes to show that people admired Richard. Even though they did admire him it was clear they dispised him. the poem also states "we worked and waited for the light and went without the meat, and cursed the bread; and Richard Cory". this quotes shows that people hated Richard because he eats like a king and they only had bread."one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head". In this quote Richard ends his life,This is ironic because he had everything everyone wanted but he didn't want it himself.

Another ironic story is "The Monkeys Paw" by W. W. JACOBS its about the White family and who are given a magic monkey paw that gives them three wishes but at the price of their son's life.the story starts when the Whites get a visit from an old friend Sergeant Major Morris. Morris pulls out the monkeys paw and tells the whites that a man put a spell on the paw that gives three separate men, three wishes from it, But in causes misfortune to who ever makes the wishes. Here you can see that Morris doesn't want his friend to have the paw because somthing bad will happen Mr white doesn't listen. Mr White then wishes for two hundred pounds and nothing happens. The next day a lady and her husband came to the White home to give them the news that their son had got caught in the machine at work and died. The lady said that in compensation for their son they will receive two hundred pounds. This story is ironic because they thought the paw didnt work and it did they just had to lose their son to receive their wish.

In 1801, a year after the White House opened, Thomas Jefferson moved in with nearly a dozen slaves from Monticello, his Virginia home. And slaves made up much of the house's staff until the death in 1850 of Zachary Taylor, the last slaveholder to be President. In the 19th century, the most prominent black guest at the White House was abolitionist Frederick Douglass. He came three times while Abraham Lincoln was President. In the history of the white house there weren't many black people many of the blacks who were in the white house early days were slaves. This is ironic because now the president of the white house is half black.

This cartoon is an example of irony. It illustrates a shark sitting on the life guard chair at the beach. There is a man laying on the beach and is the only one concerned about the situation. The cartoon is ironic because a like guard is suppose to save people of the danger at the beach, but the danger is right there on the life guards chair.

Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; a statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea. One can find irony in there life and not even realize it. irony was shown in the Richard Cory story when he kills him self. It was also found in the monkeys paw when the son died in order for them to receive the wish, and again in the house that slaves built considering that blacks were discriminated against and now one is president. lastly the situation is a tragic one but it is also ironic because it was not the first time somthing like that happens. one would think a country would be ready but they weren't.
